Logo Design Process - Motion Still Pictures

Design Brief
Motion Still Pictures is a new start up business and in need of an identity to start the new business project.  The nature of the company is Media based, offering services from Film, Video, Design and Photography.  The client wants a Logo Identity which describes the business as Creative, Technical, Sophisticated, Contemporary and Dynamic.
The final logo has to work both in full colour and also solo black and white, to make it more versatile to implement across all mediums of the business.  The logo has to be iconic where it can stand alone, such as used or watermarking the company’s creative images.  The icon should also be simple and effective enough to be transferred onto promotional materials such as t-shirts, caps, mugs, pens and so on.
There should also be opportunity to animate the Logo.  Due to the company’s nature of being Media based company, it is vital for the final logo to have a company ident to portray its nature and to attract business of similar kind.  The Ident will be the dynamic face of the business.

Initial Sketches, no particular order, the general idea here is to get down as many ideas as possible

Final Logo Development / Refining Stages

The Client decided to to go for the first concept of the camera and film clapperboard idea.  The Client felt it is an iconic concept which decribes what the company does just as a symbol on its own.  At this stage, we need to explore font, colour, and refining the logo to polish up a final.

The above stages illustrates how I refined the logo by adding colour, shading, and simplyfying the icon from the origional monotone Mock-Up Idea.  The logo is starting to take structure, and now was the time to find an accompanying font.

Looking at different font variations for the logotype

These were the 3 fonts presented to client to choose from, I felt these 3 fonts compliment the icon through its geometrical form.  We decided to go for a full Upper Case letters to create a bold an strong look that it can support the icon on top

Final Logo Design, works well in colour and monotone black and white

The monotone Logo's work well as image watermarks for the company's photography side of business

Final Project Evaluation

The concept behind the Logo is integrating both camera and film clapperboard together to illustrate the business activity of being a Film and Photography company. This creates a very iconic logo as it becomes obvious at first glance of the nature of the business even without displaying the name.  This supports the need for an iconic Logo which can stand alone.
The blue circle in the lens reflects how the company intends to bring colour and life to their digital work and through the shutter is where all the creativity forms.  The blue in the shutter becomes the focal point of the Logo drawing the viewer’s eye to the camera lens.  The dynamic shutter illustrates the need to reflect the company as dynamic and technical.
The use of a very modernistic font with good geometric curves and lines helps to fit in with the icon. The font has the same shape and form relating to the icon, creating a healthy balance.
The final Motion Ident turned out fantastic, as it had the concept and execution to portray the company as seriously creative.
